A recent red tide in southern Chile has killed millions of Atlantic salmon causing $15 million in uninsured losses for Empresas AquaChile and $6.5m in losses for Australis Seafoods, the companies said.
The companies made the disclosures in stock market filings following similar announcements from Blumar Seafoods, which reported a $7.5m loss, and Pesquera Camanchaca, which announced a $11m loss.
According to filings from AquaChile, the losses were felt at the company’s Capera, Herradura, Isla Guar and Huenquillahue facilities.
Preliminary estimates put the losses at around 2.3m fish or about 3,900 metric tons of biomass. The losses were uninsured and equivilent to about 9% of the company’s overall biomass of 25m fish, the company said [...]
