BRUSSELS, Belgium -- At the Brussels Seafood Expo Global Chinese squid trader Lian Guochen was meeting clients but also busy on his phone responding to offers from China for Argentine illex squid landed in Chinese ports.
"I am buying everything," he told Undercurrent News, showing the latest offer he had agreed to via Wechat, a popular Chinese messaging app. A trader with about 6,000 customers in China, he said he receives messages on Wechat every day from processors around China asking to buy raw material, and so he is buying what he can.
According to latest prices on the Chinese trading platform Huacai Zhaoyu, prices increased over the past month for raw Argentine illex squid traded in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province (see table) [...]
