Sea cucumber diving is a boon to fishermen and an Alaska processor although the creature sold in niche markets is both lucrative and tough to find, the Juneau Empire reported
Alaska Glacier Seafood based in Juneau said that sea cucumber skins will fetch between $20 and $30 per pound this season. The processor can handle 15,000-18,000 pounds of cucumbers daily, but procuring them can be a challenge.
“You’re going to get your wind knocked out of your sails a lot when you don’t find them. Over and over and over,” fisherman Travis Easlon said.
