East Asian landings of wild caught eel are far below the historic lows last seen in 2013, which means that some restaurants fear that a traditional Japanese eel eating holiday won't happen, the Asia Nikkei Review reported
The holiday, Doyo no Ushi no Hi, usually occurs in the summer but less than a metric ton of glass eels have been caught so far this season, far off 2013's low when only 5.2t worth of juvenile eel was caught.
The baby eels are sold on to farmers for grow out, which has also caused the prices of adult eels to skyrocket, according to the newspaper [...]
