The blooms of algae currently affecting many of Chile's major salmon harvesters are causing millions of dollars in damage but, so far, fears of a repeat of the 2016 disaster are unfounded, industry officials said.
Arturo Clement, the president of trade group SalmonChile, told Undercurrent News that as of mid-January, farmers in the Los Lagos and Aysen regions of central Chile have seen Atlantic salmon mortalities equal to nearly 3,400 metric tons of biomass.
Of this total, roughly 1,800t, with a value of nearly $8.25 million, occurred earlier this week at the Yactac site of Santiago-headquartered farmer Invermar.
