TRONDHEIM, Norway -- The decision by the world's leading salmon farmer Mowi to open its own feed pants in Norway and now Scotland has sent ripples throughout the sector; and few companies have been affected as much as the Nordic aquafeed giant Skretting.
Mowi's construction of a giant new feed plant in Kyleakin, Scotland -- which shipped out its first feed deliveries in July -- saw Skretting close its UK branch last November, as total feed capacity in the country was set to exceed the available demand by 50%. This comes after the company opened its first feed plant in Norway in 2014.
"Mowi has significantly changed the competitive landscape here; they've created a big overcapacity on feed production in the Norwegian and British market," Skretting CEO Therese Log Bergjord told Undercurrent News at AquaNor 2019. "So we've pulled out of the UK, and in Norway it's still a good business, but it's becoming quite marginal with regards to profitability."
Skretting, which is owned by the Dutch feed conglomerate Nutreco, has been diversifying its product range around the globe, a trend Log Bergjord expects to continue as the firm moves away from its salmon feed roots [...]
