As post-Brexit trade enters its second full week, it has become apparent the seafood trade crisis brought on by the new paperwork and regulations is likely to bite even harder over the coming days.
"Brexit week one was bad. Week two will be worse," wrote James Withers, chief executive of Scotland Food and Drink on Twitter. "UK govt’s dismissal of the request from us (& most main business orgs) for a grace period was a critical mistake. By this time next week, pressure to revisit that will be even greater. Emergency financial aid may also be necessary."
As of the morning of Jan. 12, many Scottish seafood traders have been left without a route to markets in Europe, after major logistics supplier DFDS announced it would be halting 'groupage' exports to the EU until Jan. 13 at the earliest [...]
