Despite frigid temperatures, the continued presence of ice and a reduced quota, the snow crab season is off to an early start in Canada's Crab Fishing Area 12, in the southern Gulf of Saint Lawrence, off the coast of the province New Brunswick, the CBC reports. According to CBC, harvesters were preparing to launch with the help of ice breakers late Friday, a month earlier than usual as part of an effort to avoid limitations due to the presence of North Atlantic right whales.
