Seafood Industry Australia (SIA), the national body representing the Australian seafood sector, has commended the current state inquiry into the labeling of alternative protein products, which it believes highlights the need to "protect the definition of seafood".
"This inquiry is vital for the animal-based protein industries to protect our name, definitions, brands and integrity systems," SIA CEO Veronica Papacosta said in a statement. "We must protect the definition of seafood, and ensure it is only applied to true, aquatic seafood species."
Papacosta added it is SIA's view that misleading origin statements and mislabelling of synthetic or plant-based products as animal-based protein has been generating confusion among consumers [...]
