The 2024 sac roe herring fishing season in the US state of Alaska kicked off on March 22 in Sitka with a guideline harvest level of 81,246 short tons (73,705 metric tons) amid an ample supply from fisheries in British Columbia (BC), Canada, and Hokkaido, Japan.
With five openings by March 27, the seiners caught 6,625 short tons (6,010t), said the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G). The main market for the sac roe herring is Japan.
The sixth opening was in northern and southern areas, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. AKDT on Thursday (March 28).
The ADF&G's test fishing on Tuesday (March 26) showed the fish size averaging 144 grams per fish, with a mature roe ratio at 11.7%, with larger in size and higher egg yield than the earlier test fishing of the season [...]
