Seafish, the UK public body supporting the seafood industry, has started its annual fishing fleet survey from July 15, it announced.
The annual survey sees researchers visiting fishing harbors and ports in the United Kingdom to gather insights into the financial performance of fishing businesses and crew demographics.
Vessel owners and skippers are urged to participate, with interviews lasting only 15 minutes and ensuring confidentiality. Participants will also receive a free First Aid at Sea Guide, Seafish said.
Juan Carlos Paredes Esclapez, Seafish's economics project manager, emphasized the survey’s importance: "By taking part, vessel owners and skippers help identify industry challenges and opportunities, aiding policymakers and stakeholders."
Participants can also request a free benchmark report comparing their vessel's performance to others, beneficial for identifying improvements and supporting grant or loan applications, the body added.
Last year's survey revealed mixed sentiments about business performance, with 24% rating it poor or below average, 41% average, and 35% above average or excellent. The outlook for the next 3-5 years showed 17% pessimistic, 37% optimistic, and 46% neutral.
