Officials in the US state of Maine have reported an outbreak of Campylobacter infections traced to oysters sold under the Recompense Cove brand.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in an alert issued on Thursday (July 25) that the oysters were harvested between June 19 and July 16 in parts of the Casco Bay region. The notice included an example of a shellfish tag (see photo) that would be attached to containers for reference.
The harvest date and harvest area fields on the tag would include the specific dates and harvest areas identified in the recall information, it said.
The Maine Department of Marine Resources brought the outbreak to the FDA's attention on July 11, but the federal agency has not disclosed the specific number of affected individuals or their locations.
The potentially contaminated oysters have been distributed across various states in the US, including California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont as well as the province of Ontario, Canada.
