The US state of Washington has started looking into the possibility of offshore wind development, with voters deciding the fate of money earmarked to study future projects this November.
There are currently no offshore wind projects off Washington's coast. However, public radio station, KNKX, in Seattle, Washington, reports that last spring, the state legislature put $625,000 towards studying offshore wind, including mapping projects. Although, voters could decide to repeal that funding this November.
It's the latest state in the region to explore offshore wind. Undercurrent News previously reported that policymakers in the neighboring Pacific Northwest state of Oregon have moved ahead with plans for offshore wind development.
Offshore wind has received considerable pushback from the fishing industry there and in other areas of the US.
KNKX similarly reports that the latest step towards offshore wind in Washington has generated similar questions over how turbines affect fish populations. A bill that would have studied the issue specific to Washington's coastline, however, failed to pass during the most recent legislative session.
