The US is on pace to break the record yet again for its import of Canadian snow crab, but are there enough of the crustaceans left in Canada to make it happen?
The US imported 37,475 metric tons of Canadian snow crab worth $586.5 million in the first six months of 2024, 19% ahead of the volume and 45% ahead of the value seen during the first half of 2023, based on the latest update of seafood trade data by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The total 53,536t of Canadian snow crab imported by the US in 2023 set the all-time record and the import value of $688.8m was second only to 2021, when the US imported 40,137t worth nearly $1.2 billion [...]
