OBI Seafoods' processing plant in the US city of Petersburg, Alaska, hit a milestone this week -- 100,000 cases of pink salmon packed for the 2024 season.
Petersburg-based public radio station KFSK reported staff at the facility blew the plant's whistle on Monday (Aug. 12), as is the tradition for hitting the 100,000 case mark. This year's milestone was reached about a week later than last year, they said.
That's partially due to slower fishing being reported across the state of Alaska, including in Southeast, which is where Petersburg is located. Even-year pink runs are smaller than odd years, due to the fish's specific genetic profiles.
OBI Seafoods operates 10 facilities across the state.
The public radio station reports staff at the Petersburg plant hope to blow the whistle another time before the end of the season -- when 200,000 cases of salmon have been packed.
