Three fishermen are reportedly safe after their fishing vessel, the Mariah K, caught fire roughly 50 miles off the coast of the US state of Oregon and the town of Brookings last week (Aug. 17).
The Curry Coastal Pilot, an Oregon news service, reports that a US Coast Guard (USCG) rescue team responded to the blaze, after it was reported by Eli’s Tide, a nearby Good Samaritan vessel. Eli's Tide also pulled all three crew members from the water.
The survivors were transported to awaiting medical personnel, with one requiring medevac for additional attention. A GoFundMe page set up by the family of one of the crew -- Emanuel Silveira -- indicated he had suffered from serious burns over 60% of his body that will require an extended hospital stay.
The family went on to indicate that the crew member believes the blaze started when the engine on board the fishing vessel exploded.
Silveira runs a fishing operation out of Woodley Island Marina, in Eureka, California. He and his wife, Mariah, have two young sons, according to the article. There's no indication from the articles what Silveira and his crew were fishing for.
The USCG is reportedly investigating what caused the fire.
