A fire at a Handy Seafood International property, in Crisfield, Maryland, early Thursday morning (Aug. 29) caused $350,000 in damages, reports ABC television affiliate WMDT.
Officials from the Maryland State Fire Marshall's office said the fire at the company's crab-shedding house on North 7th Street started just before 2 a.m. local time. The shedding house was being used as a maintenance shop.
In a press release issued on Thursday, the company clarified that the maintenance shop was separate from the main production facility.
"Local firefighters responded promptly to the scene and successfully contained the fire. The fire caused minimal disruption to the plant's operations," Handy stated in the release.
The company, which touts itself as North America's oldest seafood processor, produces crab cakes, canned crab meat and soft-shelled crabs, as well as a variety of ready-to-eat seafood appetizers.
