Canadian artificial intelligence (AI) technology firm ReelData has entered into a three-year agreement with Icelandic aquaculture company Samherji to implement its AI-driven feeding efficiency software, ReelAppetite, across multiple land-based fish farming sites in Iceland.
The decision to expand the use of ReelAppetite follows a successful pilot at Samherji's Arctic charr facility in Staour, located in Reykjanes, southwest Iceland, the companies announced on Thursday (Oct. 3).
The technology will now be implemented at the company's two other Arctic charr farms near Reykjavik and a third site that farms Atlantic salmon in northern Iceland.
The agreement aligns with Samherji's plans to improve fish production efficiency and increase biomass at existing facilities, said Jon Kjartan Jonsson, managing director of Samherji Fiskeldi.
"Samherji is constantly looking for ways to improve fish performance and production results. We consider ReelData to be a significant part of the foundation on which we plan to build more efficient land-based salmon farming going forward," Jonsson said.
The company is also preparing to expand operations with a new site that is projected to produce over 40,000 metric tons of fish annually.
This deal adds Samherji to ReelData's client list, including Norwegian land-based salmon producer Salmon Evolution and Florida-based Atlantic Sapphire.
