A local councillor in the UK port of Grimsby has criticized a judicial review of a planned land-based salmon farm in the area, reports The Grimsby Telegraph.
The proposed onshore salmon farm has hit a legal setback following the UK High Court's decision to grant a judicial review. AquaCultured Seafood, the company behind the project, aims to produce 5,000 metric tons of Atlantic salmon annually and create up to 100 jobs.
The challenge, brought by Animal Equality UK, questions North East Lincolnshire Council's approval of the project, citing that animal welfare concerns were improperly dismissed during planning.
Local councillor Philip Jackson, who supported the plan, criticized the review, warning it sets a "dangerous precedent" for local governance and future aquaculture developments. Animal Equality UK argues that the council ignored animal welfare in the decision-making process.
