A commercial fisherman and a US state of Washington observer were rescued early Monday (Oct. 14) after a gillnet vessel sank in Willapa Bay about 95 miles southwest of Seattle.
A statement by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife said one of its employees – who was not identified – was on board as a fisheries observer west of Tokeland when the vessel reported taking on water at about 8:30 a.m.
The vessel's skipper and agency observer were rescued by a nearby gillnet boat and reportedly unharmed. Local and state authorities and the US Coast Guard were notified.
It wasn't clear what species the fishing vessel was targeting or the cause of the mishap. The state's onboard observer monitoring program monitors commercial harvests and collects data on regional fisheries.
