Canada, Halifax-based technology startup ReelData is partnering with The Kingfish Company to trial its AI-powered biomass camera, "ReelWeight," at the latter's Zeeland site in the Netherlands.
The project marks a significant milestone as it becomes the first trial to adapt ReelData's AI weighing technology for kingfish species.
"We eagerly anticipate the insights this innovation will bring, empowering us to fine-tune our productivity. At The Kingfish Company, our relentless pursuit of excellence in genetics, nutrition, and operational management makes a detailed understanding of growth performance absolutely vital. This cutting-edge technology is a promising step forward in achieving that goal," said Bram Rohaan, head of production at The Kingfish Company.
ReelWeight, designed, developed, and manufactured by ReelData, is a camera system that has already been successfully deployed for salmonid species. It can measure fish weighing from 25 grams to over 7 kilograms.
The technology uses "individual fish recognition" to generate sample estimates, avoiding the need for repeated measurements of the same fish. This feature delivers more robust and precise weight estimates, ensuring a clearer picture of the weight distribution within a population.
"We look forward to working closely with The Kingfish Company team over the coming months and are excited about the opportunity to continue to develop the ReelWeight technology by expanding into an additional species and adding even more capability to the ReelWeight camera," said Gareth Butterfield, ReelData's commercial director.
The project is part of a broader effort by ReelData, which has already undertaken several commercial tests throughout 2024, with additional installations planned at Atlantic salmon and Arctic charr facilities across Europe, North America, and Chile.
