The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) faces scrutiny over its certification of Chilean salmon farms operating in protected areas following an investigation by the Dutch news outlet Follow the Money.
Follow the Money found ASC-certified farms are operating in Chilean nature reserves and national parks, including facilities run by Nova Austral in the Alberto de Agostini National Park.
Nova Austral, which operates 19 farms in the park -- six of which are ASC-certified -- has previously faced sanctions for overproduction and environmental violations. Follow the Money traced its ASC-certified salmon to major European retailers, including Albert Heijn and Delhaize.
ASC head of standards Michiel Fransen told Follow the Money the organization plans to evaluate its protected areas certification policies next year.
