Norwegian Mountain Salmon (NMS) has urged authorities to lift a two-year moratorium on land-based fish farming licenses, saying the freeze has damaged Norway's competitive position in global aquaculture markets, reports LandBasedAQ.
The company, which plans to build a flow-through facility in western Norway, has begun exploring sites in Scotland due to the Norwegian government's December 2022 licensing pause.
The government has received feedback on new proposed regulations from across the aquaculture sector. While NMS backed proposed rules limiting facilities to solid ground, it opposed mandatory intake water disinfection requirements, arguing these would drive up energy costs unnecessarily.
"Mandatory UV treatment at our planned Utsira facility would significantly increase energy consumption without improving biosecurity," NMS said, noting the site would draw from deep, pathogen-free waters.
The company warned the proposed regulations could disadvantage Norwegian operators against foreign competitors not subject to similar restrictions.
