Norway's government has unveiled draft technical regulations for offshore aquaculture facilities.
The proposed framework, announced by the ministry of trade, industry and fisheries, outlines functional requirements for offshore aquaculture installations.

"Norway aims to lead the development of offshore aquaculture," said fisheries and ocean minister Marianne Sivertsen Naess. "While we seek continued growth in the aquaculture industry, it must occur in a predictable, controlled, and sustainable manner."
The move comes as Norway looks to expand its aquaculture operations beyond traditional coastal and fjord locations into more exposed waters. The new regulations aim to ensure installations can withstand harsher weather conditions while maintaining worker safety, fish welfare, and environmental protection standards.
The draft regulations have been released for public consultation. Stakeholders have until Feb. 25, 2025, to submit their feedback.
