EU negotiators are set to demand an early deal on fishing rights in 'reset' negotiations with the UK due to take place in 2025, reports The Financial Times.
UK ministers, including chancellor Rachel Reeves, have previously said they will seek a "very ambitious" reset of the UK's security and trading agreements in next year's talks, looking to break down trade barriers and create opportunities for investors.
However, the UK's red lines, which have ruled out rejoining the EU's single market or customs union, mean there are only "limited" economic gains for the bloc to make, according to a working paper circulated to EU members.
The paper states that the UK must agree to a prompt deal on fishing rights and full implementation of the "Windsor framework" on trading arrangements for Northern Ireland if it wants to see a reduction in trading barriers.
This deal would reportedly be an extension of the current deal for fishing rights in UK waters, which expires on June 30, 2026.
