A lobster boat docked at Merrill's Wharf in the US fishing hub of New Bedford, Massachusetts, caught fire early Tuesday (Dec. 24), Christmas Eve.
The New Bedford Fire Department responded to a report of a fishing vessel fire at Merrill's Wharf Tuesday at 8:38 am, according to a Facebook post from the fire department. Crew that arrived first said smoke could be seen coming from inside the pilot house of a 30-foot-long lobster boat.
Engine 1 deployed a 1 3/4 hose line to extinguish the fire. A marine vessel also aided the fire department in containing the oil spill in the area of the vessel.
The New Bedford Fire Department said that its Fire Investigation Unit is investigating the cause of the fire.
New Bedford, Massachusetts, is the US port with the highest value of seafood landed, according to the latest Fisheries of the United States report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Per the report, in 2023 New Bedford landed 76.9 million pounds (34881 metric tons) of seafood -- the primary being scallops and lobster -- valued at $363.3m.
