A US fishing crew member who was injured after a fall into a porthole was evacuated Monday (Dec. 23), by the US Coast Guard in Hawaii, authorities said.
A MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point rendezvoused with the HONUA-OE some eight miles offshore from the island Hawai'i, the Coast Guard said.
The hovering Coast Guard helicopter hoisted the 51-year-old crew member, who authorities did not name, from the 39-foot fishing vessel northeast of Honokaa, Hawai'i.
Sector Honolulu watchstanders first received a notification at 3:22 pm Monday from the captain of the HONUA-OE, requesting a medevac while the vessel was approximately 20 miles north of Hawi, Hawai'i.
Watchstanders consulted with the duty flight surgeon, who recommended a medevac, which was completed around 8 pm that evening.
The crew member is reportedly in stable condition after being treated at a hospital in the city of Hilo, the Coast Guard said.
