Prince Abdulaziz bin Saad bin Abdulaziz, the governor of Hail, a city in north-western Saudi Arabia, inaugurated the Excellence Center for Salmon Production in the area on Dec. 28, reports Arab News, citing the Saudi Press Agency.
The facility, reportedly the largest of its kind in the Middle East, is a collaboration between the ministry of environment, water, and agriculture and King Abdulaziz University.
Spanning 10,000 square meters, the center includes recirculating aquaculture systems and aquaponics units that integrate fish and vegetable production.
It is set to produce 100,000 metric tons of salmon annually, reducing Saudi Arabia’s reliance on salmon imports, which currently stand at 23,000t per year.
The Saudi Press Agency claimed the aim is to produce 100,000 metric tons of salmon annually in the facility but did not give a timeline for getting to this level or the 2025 target. The plan is to reduce Saudi Arabia’s reliance on salmon imports, which currently stand at 23,000t per year, it said.
