Secaucus, New Jersey-based New York Mutual Trading Co, a specialist in Japanese wholesale food, beverages and restaurant supplies, has issued a recall for its prepared monkfish liver due to an undeclared allergen.

The recall notice was shared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday (Jan. 16). Per the notice, the package label for the company's 7.05 oz. of prepared monkfish liver, also known as Ankimo, contains an undeclared milk allergen.  

"People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk allergen run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product," according to the FDA. 

However, the government agency also noted that, to date, no reported illnesses have been connected to the issue.

New York Mutual Trading Co's monkfish liver product was distributed in the states of Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey and New York. While the product was primarily distributed to restaurants, the company said it was also distributed to some retail stores.

The product was last distributed in the marketplace on Dec. 14, 2024. Impacted products have the UPC code 72546611224 and lot code 2025.6.30 or before this date.

Ankimo is a Japanese delicacy that is typically rubbed with salt and then rinsed with sake. The monkfish liver is generally steamed and served sushi-style. Some say the taste and texture are similar to foie gras.
