European seafood giant Royal Greenland has launched a fully recyclable packaging solution for its 15-pound cod and halibut boxes.
The new packaging, developed with packaging solutions firm Schur, replaces traditional polyethylene-coated cardboard with a water-based coating tailored for frozen seafood.
The packaging, already in use on Royal Greenland's trawlers, meets the industry's rigorous demands, according to the firm. It can withstand plate freezing without adhering to the fish or freezer while also dissolving efficiently during recycling. It aligns with the company's aim to combine functionality and environmental responsibility, the business said.
Key benefits are said to include its plastic-free, recyclable design, enhanced print quality, and faster delivery times.
Currently limited to 15-pound boxes, Royal Greenland is exploring expanding this innovation across other product lines. Lene Vognsen, the group's innovation director, said the development marks a significant step in the firm's green transition, reflecting its ambition to create more innovative, sustainable packaging solutions.
