Scottish salmon producers can now remove the word "farmed" from the front of their packaging, following a ruling by government lawyers who deemed the term unnecessary and potentially pejorative, reports The Guardian.
Last year, the protected geographical indication for "Scottish farmed salmon" was changed to "Scottish salmon" after industry lobbying.
Campaign groups, including Animal Equality UK and Wildfish, appealed the decision, arguing it misled consumers about the product's origin. However, the government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs argued that "Scottish salmon" clearly identifies the product's origin, with no evidence of confusion.
Salmon Scotland, the industry group, defended the change, noting that UK consumers already know the salmon is farmed. The term "farm-raised" will still be required on the back of the packaging.
