Cliff White has joined Undercurrent News as editorial director.
White, 41, was previously the executive editor of SeafoodSource, a news site covering the global seafood industry, for nine years. The addition of White is the latest of a series of hires by UCN, which is expanding its news and data offering and has launched a US wholesale seafood price assessment service.
"UCN is unequivocally the best provider of seafood news in the world, and I'm thrilled to be joining this hard-charging team," White said.
"The seafood industry can only benefit from having independent media keeping eyes on it. I plan to work hard with the talented, hard-working team of journalists at Undercurrent to make our reporting mandatory reading for anyone working in the global seafood industry."
At SeafoodSource, White led daily editorial coverage, attended seafood industry events, and headed up special projects, including the Top 25 North American Seafood Companies and the Seafood Certifications Guide, a 320-page reference manual for seafood certifications and eco-labels.
He has spoken at events, including the National Fisheries Institute's (NFI) Global Seafood Market Conference, Seafood Expo Global, Seafood Expo North America, and webinars hosted by the James Beard Foundation and Slate.
Before his tenure at SeafoodSource, White was the senior business reporter at the Centre Daily Times, covering Central Pennsylvania, and as assistant editor at Pennsylvania Business Central. He also worked in communications at the University of Wisconsin's Wisconsin Center for Education Research and as a reporter at six weekly newspapers covering southern Maine.
White is a 2018 graduate of the NFI Future Leaders program, a graduate of Colby College with a bachelor's degree in English and Latin American Studies and is conversational in Spanish. He lives in Portland, Maine, with his wife and seven-year-old son.
