Indonesia's ministry of marine affairs and fisheries (KKP) has identified seaweed as one of its five flagship products to meet growing global demand for marine products, reports Antara.
Together with shrimp, tilapia, crab, and lobster, seaweed is expected to see steady demand growth. Projections suggest global consumption could reach between 40 million and 43m metric tons by 2029, according to Nono Hartanto, director of seaweed at KKP.
Additionally, he highlighted that the ready-to-eat food sector will remain the largest consumer of seaweed, while the aquaculture feed market is also expected to expand.
Indonesia's aquaculture production grew by 13.64% in 2024, with seaweed output increasing by 10.82%, reaching 10.8m metric tons.
