A new survey by Israel-based cultured seafood firm Forsea Foods finds that 25% of Japanese consumers are willing to try cultured eel at any price, as demand for eel rises amid overfishing and high prices.
With 35% of respondents familiar with cultured seafood, many see it as a sustainable and affordable alternative to wild eel, said the firm.
"The results of this survey were encouraging, as it shows a readiness among Japanese consumers to explore innovative food options," said Roee Nir, co-founder and CEO of Forsea.
"We've identified various consumer types, from environmentally-conscious young adults to health-focused homemakers and tech-savvy individuals, all of whom are open to cultured eel as a sustainable and affordable solution," he added.
Following this, the company plans to expand production in Japan, offering a solution to meet the nation's strong eel demand, as it consumes nearly half of the world's freshwater eel supply.
