An interesting dichotomy is opening up in the salmon industry, one that is covered in the new report from Spheric Research, Aquaculture Frontiers, part 2: Who will disrupt the salmon industry?
On the one hand, big investors are backing a wave of new major land-based salmon farming projects. 8F Investment Partners, led by a group of former senior ranking Deutsche Bank executives, announced an ambitious group of salmon farmer in Japan and the United States. Nordic Aquafarms, developing a major site in Maine, last week unveiled plans to a new site in northern California, placing the Danish company within trucking distance of wealthy cities such as Portland, San Francisco, and Seattle.
On the other hand, major salmon farmers such as Mowi and Cermaq Group are staying well clear of developing land-based grow-out farms, despite record profits and their technological expertise in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) technology [...]
