Focus has sharpened on Chinese consumption of imported, wild-caught whitefish in the context of the US-China trade war; but just how much whitefish is imported by the country and not processed and re-exported?
On July 6, China slapped additional 25% tariffs on imports of nearly all US seafood. Imports used for processing and re-exported were exempted from the tariff hike. US companies and policymakers questioned, however, how much wild-caught imported whitefish is consumed in China, which would make it subject to the additional 25% tariff.
Based on the latest Undercurrent trade analysis, in 2018 more wild-caught whitefish imported by China appeared to stay in the country compared with previous years, suggesting higher Chinese whitefish consumption [...]
