Benchmark Genetics opened its new Atlantic salmon egg production unit in Sorfold, Norway, this week to a crowd of 250, including national dignitaries, international delegates and local families. Once at capacity, the UK-based animal health and genetic services firm said the facility will produce 150 million eggs per year, the theoretical equivalent to 500,000 metric tons of harvestable salmon.
