Bill DiMento, vice president of corporate sustainability and government affairs at Canadian seafood processing giant High Liner Foods, has taken to one of the US agriculture industry's most-read news services to promote an opportunity in relation to the streamlining of regulations for offshore aquaculture. "The president’s May 7, 2020 "Executive Order on Promoting American Seafood Competitiveness and Economic Growth" includes support for the expansion of regulated domestic offshore aquaculture," he notes in a column published recently by Agri-Pulse. "The expansion of aquaculture would stimulate economic growth for both the aquaculture and agricultural industries, creating thousands of jobs in coastal and agricultural communities – two communities hurt deeply by the effects of COVID-19."
In particular, "[t]he expansion of aquaculture in the US will lead to increased demand for American-grown crops, which can be used in plant-based fish feed, such as soybeans, corn and peas, creating new job opportunities for America’s terrestrial farmers, the backbone of our nation and economy," he continues.
