Cautious hopes rise that Alaska's Copper River could have a 'normal' yearThe 2021 Copper River sockeye season is set to hold its first 12-hour "opener" or fishing period Monday, May 17. Some 1.3 million fish are expected to return this year allowing for a projected commercial harvest of 652,000 sockeye. But it will take a few days of fishing effort before any conclusions can be drawn about the prospects for the season, Jeremy Botz, an ADF&G biologist based in Cordova, told Undercurrent News.
