While the EU had already been dependent on seafood imports to meet continental demand, the trend has only worsened in 2020, according to this year's edition of the annual finfish study published by processing representative body AIPCE-CEP.
"The first thing to note is that we are significantly deficient in the EU for our needs for fish and seafood," said Simon Rilatt -- chairman of AIPCE-CEP's trade working group and procurement director with A. Espersen -- at a symposium held by the organization on Dec. 1. "The estimates for 2020 suggest that we are 85% dependent on imports for consumption."
Altogether last year, the EU imported 8.9 million metric tons of fish and fishery products, according to AIPCE-CEP's report, while total seafood consumption across the bloc came to 10.5m metric tons [...]
