An Indian shrimp farmer claims to have used everyday home cooking ingredients in its aquafeed, including turmeric, garlic and tamarind, to set a record for the largest vannamei shrimp grown in conventional pond aquaculture, reports ANINews. Kings Infra Venture, a technology-driven aquaculture company, claimed its shrimp weighed 80 grams (210 millimeters) at harvest, which is just below the recognized maximum weight of vannamei shrimp caught in the wild, it said.
"The information available with us shows that there is no record of L Vannamei shrimps weighing 80g per piece have been grown in an aquafarm anywhere in the world," said Shaji Baby John, Kings Infra chairman and managing director.
The firm hailed its special shrimp feed formula for the turbo-charged growth, which was achieved in a mere 100-130 days.
Listed ingredients include curd, jaggery, turmeric, moringa leaves, garlic, and tamarind, it said, which helped to improve immunity and disease resistance, as well as improve growth rates. This was supplemented with a diet of antibiotic-free feed and probiotics.
John said the jumbo-sized shrimp would "totally change the economics of shrimp farming", as farmers could fetch prices of $15 per kilogram for jumbo-sized shrimp compared with $5/kg for standard sizes. Undercurrent News was unable to verify the claims in the article [...]
