One of Europe's largest processors of live bivalve shellfish has called on the UK government to help reduce the regulatory "mountain" to climb for British mussel farmers to export their product to the EU.
Caroline Verwijs, director of Krijn Verwijs Yerseke, a Netherlands-based processor founded in 1880, told Undercurrent News that she buys 20% of the 15-20 million kilograms of mussels the company cleans and processes each year from Britain. However, she would buy "more high-quality British mussels" if trading regulations were more favorable.
"I would say the UK government should encourage people to step into this sector by doing more business with other countries, and avoid trying to make a mountain to climb that's too high," she said [...]
