Aldi UK abruptly drops smoked salmon supplier

The UK arm of German discounter Aldi Sud has abruptly dropped a Yorkshire-based smoked salmon supplier, Bleiker's Smokehouse, sources told Undercurrent News. As a result, Aldi is asking other smokers to start supplying, sources said. Click here for the full story. 

Norway, Scottish salmon prices break records as Chile rebounds

Spot prices for Norwegian farmed salmon pushed past NOK 100 ($11.45) per kilogram to a new Easter record with Scottish prices following suit, while the recent dip in Chilean prices has also rebounded ahead of week 15, sources told Undercurrent. Click here for the full story. 

Russian whitefish exports not included in latest sanctions, EU confirms

The European Commission has officially unveiled its latest wave of sanctions against Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine, and once again Russian whitefish exports are not included among the affected imported goods. Click here for the full story. 

Hearing used to make case that expanded SIMP would better block Russian seafood

The champions for expanding the Seafood Import Monitoring Program made their case Thursday that such a move would not only help to stop slave labor in commercial fishing but also block Russian seafood from coming into the US from other countries, especially China. Click here for the full story. 

UK seafood firms warn labor shortages have 'halved profitability'

Several seafood businesses in the southwest of the UK -- and one from Scotland -- have warned a government inquiry that labor shortages are directly impacting on profitability and the future of the sector. The UK's Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee concluded in its report, published at the end of March 2022, that it had been "struck by the government's failure to grasp the labor issues faced by the food and farming sector" in the UK, and the "actual experience of businesses on the ground".
