Chilean salmon producer Multi X has announced a partnership with biotechnology startup Bioelements to replace all packaging for its fresh fillet products with "100% biodegradable" materials.
The initiative, part of Multi X's sustainability strategy, will affect 35% of the company's annual production, primarily impacting exports to the US. More than 18 million biodegradable bags will be produced annually, decomposing within six to 20 months without the need for composting.
Fernando Perez, chief sales and marketing officer at Multi X, called the move "a relevant milestone in our path towards carbon neutrality."
