Mowi Scotland has opened a remote operations centre (ROC) in Fort William, Scotland, to centrally monitor and feed its salmon farms across the region.
The ROC allows farms to be fed from one location through cameras and pellet recognition technology. This aims to optimize feeding strategies, keep regimes consistent, and enable feeding during poor weather.
Currently, three farms located seven to 18 kilometers from the ROC are connected, with plans to add four more farms up to 75 kilometers away by August. Ultimately, Mowi Scotland intends to feed all of its mainland farms through the ROC.
In total, 12 operators work week-on, week-off shifts to monitor the farms around the clock. Lead operator David Horne said the technology had impressed him so far, allowing each shift member to feed three to four sites.
"We work closely with farm staff to ensure everything is working and fish are well cared for," Horne said. "The set-up is great for operator comfort."
Team leader Kris Wright noted learning curves with new systems but said the ROC will greatly benefit feeding, fish health, safety, and work-life balance.
Mowi said operator recruitment is complete for now but will continue in phases as more farms connect, with those interested advised to check the company's vacancies page.
