A petition seeking to prevent three land-based salmon facilities in France -- and any future such endeavors -- is nearing 60,000 signatures as of mid-August 2024.
The projects currently underway are Smart Salmon in Plouisy, Pure Salmon in Verdon-sur-Mer, and Local Ocean in Boulogne-sur-Mer, which together intend to farm some 27,000 metric tons.
The petition claims the units will be far too densely packed with fish and comes at a time when intensive farming in general is being heavily scrutinized in France.
The petition -- run by French organization Welfarm -- stands at 58,404 signatures on Aug. 14.
Local Ocean hopes to begin production by 2025, while Pure Salmon is due to be set up on the site of the Verdon port terminal, owned by the Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux, within three years, according to Basta.
Smart Salmon has found it difficult to gain the blessing of elected officials, and its start date remains uncertain.
