This year's pink salmon season globally may be one of the worst on record after last year's performance, which was one of the best ever, British Columbia, Canadia-based wholesaler Tradex reports in its latest 3-Minute Market Insight.
The peak harvesting weeks for pink salmon in Alaska and Russia are both over. Alaska's pink salmon harvest is at about 35% of the forecast, as reported earlier by Undercurrent News, while Russia's stands at about 50%, resulting in an estimated combined global harvest of around 137,000 metric tons (see image above story).
That's 80% lower than last year's global total and 47% below the last even-year harvest.
The general consensus from the Alaska Department and Fish and Game is that overall this year's pink salmon returns appear to be very poor and that there are not currently any indications that late returns are significant. Also, although the pink salmon harvest typically goes into September, some fishermen have already indicated that they may limit their participation for the remainder of the season.
