The 2024 commercial salmon season in Alaska is coming to an end.
According to the latest harvest update from McKinley Research Group, created on behalf of the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI), the year-to-date (YTD) harvest is 70% of the pre-season forecast and 34% lower than 2023 (2022 for pink salmon).
Looking at the data for statistical week 36, which shows harvest figures through September 7, the total harvest for Alaska salmon – which includes sockeye, pink, Keta, coho and chinook – is 95,181 fish. The total projection for this year was 135,573 fish.
The sockeye salmon harvest surpassed the projection for the season. A total of 41,205 sockeye have been harvested so far compared to the projection of 39,492 for the 2024 season. However, year-over-year (YoY), the figure is still down from 2023 [...]
