The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has confirmed the further spread of a parasite threatening Prince Edward Island's lucrative oyster industry.
The federal agency recently updated an online map showing new detections of the parasite in and around East River in Rustico and all of Malpeque Bay, reported the Atlantic edition of CTV News.
The parasite, known as MSX, reduces the lifespan of oysters but poses no risk to human health, meaning the oysters remain safe to eat.
Still, the impact on the industry is significant, the report said, as PEI fishermen harvested roughly 10,000 metric tons of oysters last year, generating almost CAD 24 million ($17.7m) in revenue. Oysters are the province's third most lucrative seafood business behind mussels and lobster.
The parasite was first detected in PEI waters in July, as Undercurrent News reported.
