UK-based frozen seafood importer Maris Seafoods has partnered with Fair Trade USA and Australis Aquaculture to import Fair Trade-certified barramundi to the UK and continental Europe, it announced on LinkedIn.
"This certification is a huge asset, giving us the ability to promote our Barramundi as meeting trusted standards for environmental sustainability, fair wages, and safe working conditions -- values that UK consumers understand and trust," said Maris, which is owned by Danish seafood giant Sirena Group.
Maris added that barramundi -- a fish native to Australia and Southeast Asia sometimes colloquially referred to as 'the white salmon' -- has already seen success in entering the US market as a premium farmed fish product, courtesy of Massachusetts, US-based Australis.
While its headquarters are in the US, Australis operates its own barramundi farm in Vietnam and is widely credited with popularizing barramundi in the US, a success Maris is hoping to emulate on the other side of the Atlantic.
"We are marketing to retail, foodservice and e-commerce in the UK and Europe with a highly positive interest, confident it’s a species that ticks the right boxes for ethical and high-quality seafood," said Maris.
